Apr 012014

It is April, and this year people are hoping that water going back to its liquid state is not just another April Fool’s prank…

The geekery seems to be picking up steam with conventions and events all over the place, but the big thing this month for GPS is the 16th Annual Team Trivia Challenge on April 12 (see below).

This is the first year it’s being held at a location that is not the mothership (a.k.a. the Doubletree) or Event Horizon. We are excited to have it at Pepito’s Parkway Theater in South Minneapolis.

The Team Trivia Challenge is a game show-style trivia competition for teams of four. Teams test their science fiction and fantasy knowledge on a variety of topics ranging across movies, comics, television, science, books, and more. Eight teams (the previous year’s defending champions and seven challenging teams) compete for bragging rights and (modestly budgeted) fabulous prizes! Come to compete, come to cheer your friends on, and come be amazed at the depth of nerdiness!

For this year’s list of books and details how to register a team, please check the website.

GPS April Events

April 5 | 10 am – 10 pm | International Tabletop Game Day

“International TableTop Day is a celebration for all the fans of tabletop gaming. A single day where the whole world is brought together in a common purpose of spending time together and having fun.”

United Geeks of Gaming is one of the Twin Cities sites for this day’s event, and they are also doing a chili potluck!

You are invited to bring a crock pot of your favorite chili to share. Please also bring a serving spoon for your chili and an ingredients list. Things that will be provided include: bowls; utensils; power strips; shredded cheddar cheese; sour cream; bread (white and wheat); tortilla chips; saltine crackers; and sriracha sauce (for those that want it a little hotter). If you want something special to add on to your chili, bring it. Please RSVP on the meetup at http://www.meetup.com/geekgaming/ and say what kind of chili if you are bringing (suggested donation of $5 if you aren’t but want to eat).

Elections are coming. At the Geek Partnership Society’s (GPS) Annual Membership Meeting we will be electing three (3) directors to the Board. To vote in the upcoming elections you will need to have volunteered at least 20 hours for GPS organizations before May 1st. Volunteer opportunities are out there, so you can still get your time in!

Anyone eligible to vote may also be eligible to run for the board. Contact secretary@geekpartnership.org for more information or to declare your intent to run. All declarations must be received by the Secretary by May 1st.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Also, we are forming an Elections Committee to set up and run the election. Contact secretary@geekpartnership.org if you’re interested. We want to have 4 people, who will be working with the Secretary.

THE 17th ANNUAL MARK TIME AWARDS FOR SF AUDIO

The judges have the entries for the annual Mark Time and Ogle Awards for SF audio. We have 15 entries from 3 continents totaling around 20 hours that each judge gets to hear and evaluate.  This year we added a new judge: Fred Greenhalgh has won a couple of Mark Times himself, and he runs FinalRune Productions out in Maine.  We are lucky to have someone with his expertise and experience on the panel.

We like to see the people who have entered before send in their new works, as it means they are continuing to make science fiction and fantasy audio theater. Most of them get better at it with each new audio play.  As usual, we have several returning entrants and some new ones who have never sent in pieces before. We like them, too.

Announcement of the winners will be in mid-June, and the presentation to the winners will be during the Opening Ceremony at CONvergence in July. Be sure to check out the Mark Time website to find some of the best SF and F audio theater over the last 16 years. Especially look for the Mark Time SF Audio Hall of Fame for the best going back to the 1930s.
